us gold bullion coins
In 1986, the US started striking gold bullion coins. Intended to compete with the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Austrian Philharmonic and the South African Krugerrand among others, the value of an American Eagle bullion coin is directly tied to the actual price of gold.
Liberty, as depicted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, graces one side of the US gold bullion coins. This design was first seen on the $20 gold piece that was used from 1907 to 1933. Miley Busiek created the reverse design. Since the design is so highly valued by collectors, the US Mint manufactures a proof version of the coin and sells uncirculated coins. Only bullion coins have their value tied to gold prices.
Two Choices for US Gold Bullion Coins
In 2006, the US Mint started pressing Gold American Buffalo bullion coins, which have a higher gold content than the American Eagles. This coin features designs originally created by American sculptor James Earle Fraser, who was once a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. These images were originally created for the nickel. Both the Buffalo and Eagle are legal tender with a face value of $50. Their actual value and price far outweighs the face value, however.
With their ease of transport, US bullion coins are a cost-effective way to add a small amount of gold to your portfolio.
