precious metal exchange
Precious metal Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) are index funds traded similarly to most stocks on major stock exchanges. Instead of actually investing in physical gold, administered by brokers or fund managers, you are investing in certificates backed by gold, silver or other precious metals. In some cases, these funds are not even backed by real precious metals, but by stock in mining companies.
With the advent of precious metal exchanges, people are able to invest in gold and silver without worrying about storing bullion. Many of the hassles of insurance and shipping are avoided, and exchange funds are easily traded. These factors seemed to make investing in precious metals accessible to a wider range of people. Unfortunately, with the account fees and restrictions associated with most brokerage accounts, it really only opened the door for larger investors.
Precious Metal Exchange Opens Up Investing to More People
If you plan to invest over time or make a small investment, ETFs are not the best choice for you. This is because the fickle nature of investors can cause the prices of ETFs to fluctuate a great deal, while physical precious metal tends to be a more secure, steady investment. EFTs also require that investors pay brokerage fees tied to each trade. Like investing in any stock, you must pay a fee per trade--both buying and selling--unlike the low- or no-cost commission fees of buying physical gold.
